Tyrrell Hatton claimed victory in the 2025 Hero Dubai Desert Classic after a dramatic final day, edging out Daniel Hillier by one stroke. Rory McIlroy mounted a late charge to finish in a commendable fourth position.
Hatton, 33, showcased his prowess by overcoming a one-shot overnight deficit to finish on 15 under par, securing his first Rolex Series title since 2021. His win solidifies his standing as a key contender for Team Europe in the upcoming Ryder Cup.
A Thrilling Finale
The turning point came at the fifth hole, where Hillier found himself in trouble in the rough, requiring multiple attempts to recover. Hatton capitalised on the opportunity with a birdie, while Hillier dropped a shot. Despite Hillier’s resilience on the back nine, including a birdie on the 18th, Hatton held his nerve to sink a decisive five-foot putt for the win. This marks Hatton as the fifth Englishman to claim the prestigious title.
Reflecting on his triumph, Hatton said, "This is one of the events you dream of winning. To have my name on that trophy alongside so many great champions is a surreal feeling."
McIlroy’s Late Charge
Rory McIlroy, a four-time winner of the Dubai Desert Classic, staged an impressive comeback with a six-under-par 66 on Sunday, moving from 12th to joint-fourth. Although unable to clinch a third consecutive title, McIlroy’s back-nine performance, which included five birdies, showcased his determination.
“I left myself too much to do after the first three rounds,” McIlroy admitted. “I felt like I played well overall, but I couldn’t get the putts to drop earlier in the week. It’s encouraging to see improvement heading into the next few tournaments.”
Looking Ahead
McIlroy is set to compete in the TGL with his Boston Common Golf team on January 27, followed by the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Hatton, meanwhile, will look to build on his success as the season progresses. The Hero Dubai Desert Classic once again delivered high drama and exceptional golf, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead on the DP World Tour.
