Tiger Woods Rules Himself Out of Hero World Challenge Return

Tiger Woods has officially confirmed that he will not be competing in this year's Hero World Challenge, the prestigious event that he personally hosts each December. The 15-time major champion shared the news on social media on Monday, expressing his disappointment in being unable to participate.

Woods has faced significant injury struggles in recent years, and his return to competitive golf has been limited. Since his career-altering car accident in February 2021, the former world No. 1 has made just 11 competitive starts. His 2024 season was similarly challenging, as he missed the cut in three out of the four majors, including finishing last among those who made the cut at The Masters.

In September, Woods underwent surgery to address ongoing back issues, including spasms and pain that had hindered his ability to play at full capacity. Despite initially targeting a return for the Hero World Challenge and the PNC Championship later this year, Woods announced on Monday that he would not be ready to compete in December's events.

“I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete this year at the Hero World Challenge,” Woods said in his post. However, he expressed excitement about welcoming players like Justin Thomas, Jason Day, and Nick Dunlap to the 20-player field at the event, which runs from December 5 to December 8 in the Bahamas.

Woods had hoped to play alongside his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship, but his recovery continues to take priority as he focuses on regaining full fitness.

The Hero World Challenge, which Woods both hosts and competes in when healthy, will proceed without the golfing legend this year, but fans can look forward to a competitive field, with the tournament broadcast live on Sky Sports.
