Tiger Woods has reached a remarkable milestone, celebrating his 50th birthday as one of the most influential athletes the sport of golf has ever known. A 15-time major champion and 82-time PGA Tour winner, Woods’ legacy is secure—but the question many fans are asking is a familiar one: will we see Tiger compete again?

A Career Shaped by Comebacks

Woods’ playing schedule has been severely limited since the devastating car accident in 2021 that left him with life-threatening injuries. In the five years since, he has completed just four full 72-hole tournaments. The physical toll has been immense, and 2025 proved particularly cruel.

After rupturing his Achilles tendon in March, Woods missed the entire major season before undergoing disc replacement surgery in October—at least the seventh back operation of his career. As of early December, doctors had only cleared him to chip and putt, with full recovery still a long way off.

“It was something I needed to do,” Woods said of the surgery. “But it takes time and dedication to the rehab process.”

What’s Next for Tiger?

Turning 50 opens a new chapter. Woods is now eligible for the PGA Tour Champions, where he would be permitted to use a golf cart during regular-season events. That option, combined with a lighter schedule, could offer a more realistic path back to competition.

He has also committed to appearing in the TGL indoor league in 2026, although he has already ruled himself out of the early fixtures. Woods admitted that even TGL requires more physical demand than he can currently manage.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to play later in the season,” he said. “But I’ve got to be able to hit more than chip and putt.”

Majors Still on the Radar

Despite the setbacks, Woods has never ruled out another major appearance. He holds lifetime exemptions to The Masters and the PGA Championship and remains eligible for The Open for another decade. A special exemption could also open the door to future US Open starts.

His last major victory came at Augusta in 2019—a moment that reminded the world why his name still commands reverence. While his recent major appearances have ended early, Woods has repeatedly stated that he believes another win is possible if everything aligns.

An Enduring Impact

Whatever happens next, Tiger Woods’ influence on golf is undeniable. He transformed the sport’s popularity, inspired generations of players, and redefined what was possible on and off the course.

As one pundit put it:
“Until Tiger believes there is no chance, he will keep trying.”

Whether his next appearance comes on the Champions Tour, in TGL, or at Augusta once more, the sporting world will be watching—hopeful that golf’s most compelling comeback story still has another chapter to write.
