SAN ROQUE, SPAIN — October 20, 2024:

Julien Guerrier clinched his first-ever DP World Tour title in dramatic fashion at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters. The Frenchman outlasted Spain's Jorge Campillo in a record-equalling nine-hole playoff at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, marking a breakthrough win in his 230th tour appearance.

A Marathon Playoff Ends Guerrier's Long Wait

Guerrier, who started the final round tied for the lead, carded a two-under 70, featuring five birdies, a bogey, and a double-bogey. His chances looked slim after a shaky back nine, but a crucial 15-foot par save on the 18th hole kept him in the game. Campillo, playing alongside Guerrier, faltered late, bogeying two of his last four holes to finish tied at 21 under par, setting the stage for an epic playoff.

The duo played eight consecutive extra holes on the par-four 18th, with neither able to pull ahead until Campillo found trouble on the ninth extra hole. After a bogey from the Spaniard, a solid par from Guerrier secured the win, equalling the record for the longest playoff in DP World Tour history.

A Rollercoaster Final Round

The lead exchanged hands multiple times during an intense final day. Both players made the turn in 33 strokes, but a two-shot swing on the 10th hole saw Guerrier fall behind with a bogey. However, he bounced back with birdies on the next two holes, reclaiming the lead when Campillo bogeyed the 12th. Yet, a double-bogey at the par-three 13th put Guerrier back on the defensive as Campillo took advantage.

Campillo's struggles continued with another bogey at the 15th, and a missed par putt on the final hole allowed Guerrier to extend the contest. England's Dan Brown finished two strokes back in third, despite a stunning run of four consecutive birdies on the back nine, while home favorite Jon Rahm secured sixth place after a five-under 67.

Record-Breaking Drama at Sotogrande

The playoff was reminiscent of previous nine-hole marathons on the DP World Tour, including Raphael Jacquelin's win at the Spanish Open in 2013 and Jose Maria Olazabal's victory at the 1989 Dutch Open. Guerrier's coach, Jacquelin, could undoubtedly relate to the tension as his student battled through the extended playoff.

Despite the length of the contest, Guerrier remained composed, highlighting his improved putting as the key to victory. "I can't believe it," he said. "Jorge is a great player, and I knew it would be really tough because his putting is amazing. My iron game was not great today, but I trusted my putting, and it paid off. I thought about my kids on that last putt, and they gave me the strength to make it."

Looking Ahead: The Tour Continues in South Korea

Following the thrilling finish in Spain, the DP World Tour heads to South Korea for the Genesis Championship at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon. This event will serve as the final regular-season tournament, setting the stage for the tour's next big competitions. Fans can catch all the action live on Sky Sports or stream it on NOW.
